HTSB STANDARD #9 - PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND ETHICAL PRACTICE
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
In September I attended a Planning/Collaboration Day at Farrington High School delivered by Farrington Complex Area office in partnership with the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) on the topic of increasing educator understanding of Micronesian students’ and families’ experiences in (and expectations of) school. It was fascinating to learn about differences in communication norms and non-verbal cues, as well as exploring some culturally responsive sheltered instruction [CRSI] strategies for supporting EL students. Being aware of some of these cultural cues has already been helpful to me in the classroom. Several of my students communicate with their eyebrows, and in this time of mask-wearing it can be especially important to be sensitive to these non-verbal cues!
I have also attended sessions aimed at new teachers provided by the Department of Education, Leeward Community College (regarding teacher licensing), a Professional Development day to attend EES (Educator Effectiveness System) training, and the BTSA (Beginning Teacher Summer Academy) during Summer.
I also recently completed an online graduate level course through Humboldt State University called Essential Creativity in the Classroom, aimed at providing tools and strategies for educators to bring out their students’ best creative work.
