HTSB STANDARD #7 - PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

During Fall 2020 I developed my curriculum and lesson plans for Ceramics, based on the existing course descriptions, CTE Standards and Fine Arts Standards. Since this is a multi-level class, I needed to consider appropriate content for students who are completely new to Ceramics, as well as students returning for a 2nd or 3rd semester of Ceramics. I also designed my course to take into consideration that students range from 9th to 12th grade, may be English Language Learners, and may not have take a general art class or be familiar with the Elements of Art or Principles of Design yet. Since initially developing my curriculum, I have had the opportunity to use it in a hybrid online/in-class environment in Spring 2021, and then in-class for Fall 2021, and have been able to refine and develop my instruction along the way. We have also increased the emphasis on developing literacy, collaborative and community-based knowledge during Fall 2021, with written reflections and responses to artist quotes, a collaborative Safety Poster Design project and a visit and demonstration from a Zen Buddhist Priest and Ceramicist at the Chozen-Ji Temple.
