HTSB STANDARD #10 - LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
In addition to establishing communication and collaboration with my learners, their families and my colleagues (as shown in my Classroom Management Plan), I have taken additional steps to grow in my collaboration and leadership roles in the school community.
In Fall 2021 I participated in the Halloween Door Design competition, and created a class project so my students could work on it with me collaboratively and exhibit our School Spirit. We had a design competition, created the components together, and won the “Most Colorful” category. We played some code cracking games and “pass the pumpkin” to celebrate our success!
I was also excited to participate in the Homecoming Banner parade as part of the judging team, and my students were excited to see me on the judging panel and have me wear their class t-shirt colors.
In Fall 2021 we also established a community connection with the Chozen-Ji Temple in Kalihi Valley, and in December we had a visiting Priest and Ceramicist, Ms. Moon, demonstrate a zen wheel-throwing techniques and explain the training philosophy of the temple. We were fascinated to learn that the temple has a long history with Farrington High School, and trains students in Martial Arts, Japanese Sword Fighting and Archery, Flower Arrangement and Calligraphy as well as Ceramics. I am hopeful that this is the beginning of a renewal of the connection between Farrington High School and Chozen-Ji Temple, and hope to continue planning small events on or off campus with them in Spring 2022.
I am also planning a collaborative art exhibit for May 2022 with the Fine Arts department (Photography, General Art, and Painting/Drawing students), and am entering numerous students into the 2021 Scholastic Arts Award for their Ceramics work this semester.
