HTSB STANDARD #4 - CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s). He or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.

In Fall 2020, I created a document with Tier 1 Strategies for teaching Literacy and Language around the topic of Elements of Art and Principles of Design, based on both CTE Arts and Communication and Fine Arts Standards.

In November 2021 I shared photos with my students from the annual Hawaii Craftsmen Exibition at the Downtown Arts Center. Students were very interested to learn that a red dot sticker means an artwork has been sold, and to hear about the price tags on some of the works, as well as the prize money! It was also great for them to see that while the exhibit does look professional and carefully set up, it is possible to imagine some of their own work in such a space some day, and I encourage them to strive for this with the simple question - “why not?”
